Track B Language Curriculum Changes for 2014-2015
In our ongoing effort to improve language instruction at CSSJ, the Curriculum Committee has proposed a number of changes to Track B Chinese classes for 2014-15. We'd like to share an update on our work on that front and look forward to your suggestions and support in making the transition.
Track B classes (currently KB-8B) will be restructured into Chinese as Second Language series with two paths: Children Classes (ages 5-8) and Youth Classes (ages 9 and up).
Children (C) Classes (ages 5-8)
Current KB, 1B, 2B, and 3B classes will be renamed C1, C2, C3, and C4 and targeted toward our youngest second-language learners. The classes will continue to be exploratory in nature, i.e. to expose young children to Chinese language and culture in low-key, fun, and developmentally appropriate ways.
Youth (Y) Classes (ages 9 and up)
There will be three classes to start with (Y1, Y2, and Y3), with the goal of extending to Y4 (and possibly higher levels) in the future. We envision the Youth classes to be:
- Targeted for upper-elementary or older students, who are developmentally at a different place than lower elementary students.
- Standards-based. We are establishing clearer learning standards and expectations for each level, as well as working to improve the continuity from one level to the next.
- Set up based on student readiness / proficiency. We will be assessing all students currently in 3B-7B (and older students in 1B and 2B) to determine appropriate placements. Depending on where students are and on enrollment, we may have a different number of classes for each level in any given year. For example, we may at one point have two Y1 classes, one Y2 class, and no Y3 class.
We will continue to keep you posted on our work and how the changes would affect you. Please stay tuned! In the meantime, please feel free to reach out to Alison Woo, Academic Director, with questions and suggestions. Thanks for your support!
