Culture Classes
Culture classes are integral to our mission. They can complement language classes or taken independently. We strive to teach elements of Chinese culture that students would not otherwise have an opportunity to experience.
Classes offered each semester may vary depending on availability of teachers and student enrollment. A class will be canceled if there is an insufficient enrollment.
If you have specialized knowledge or a well-honed skill in a traditional Chinese art or another subject and would like to share with others (children or adults), please consider teaching at our school. We are always looking for parents, family members, or friends to enhance our culture class offerings.
Youth Culture Classes - Spring 2023-2024
4:00 – 4:50 pm
Asian Board Games 亞洲桌遊
This class provides a place for students to get together with other fans of the Pokémon Trading Card Game, Chinese Chess, and Go for some fun, friendship, and a little competition. Rules and strategies will be taught. For ages 8 and up. Students are to bring their own cards and board sets.
Arts & Crafts 手工藝
Students will use construction paper, paper plates, popsicle sticks, clips, etc., to make decorations in the shapes of animals, food objects, and more. This class is easy to follow for younger students. Suggested for children ages 5 -7. Class materials fee of $20 per semester (non-refundable).
Basketball (Youth) 籃球(青少年班)
Bring your basketball to burn off some energy at the courts! This class allows a child to learn the basic skills of basketball through drills and direct instruction while instilling sportsmanship and character. Participants will also have scrimmages against one another. For ages 7 and up.
Chinese Cultural Arts 中國文化美術班
This class provides students with an understanding of Chinese art and teaches the fundamentals of traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy. Students are expected to bring their own paint brush to class. If needed, the teacher can assist in purchasing paint brushes. For ages 5 and up. Class materials fee of $20 per semester (non-refundable).
Lion Dance 舞獅
A staple at Chinese New Year and cultural celebrations, lion dance is a traditional dance performance that dates back to the Qin Dynasty. Learn the art of lion dancing with Joseph Young, a CSSJ alumnus, past chairman of the SJCCC and member of the South Jersey Lion Dance Troupe. The class will focus on the most common types of movements and tricks that are performed during a traditional lion dance. For ages 5 and up. NOTE: begins 2/18/2024.
Paper Folding 摺紙
In this class, students will engage in an ancient Chinese art and learn to fold paper into various objects, animals, and other 2D and 3D shapes. Paper folding (zhe zhi) is a great way to engage with geometry and math. It is also a fun way to practice following instructions and attending to precision. For ages 5 and up. Class materials fee of $5 per semester (non-refundable).
Ping Pong (Youth) 乒乓球（青少年班）
Inspired by the youthful adults who play while you are in language class? Come with your own paddle and ping-pong balls, and our very skilled Mr. Young will supervise your two-on-two or one-on-one game! This is for intermediate to advanced players who want to practice their skills during open games. For ages 10 and up. Class will be limited to 4 students. Students must bring their own paddle and ping pong balls.
The Art of Chinese Tea 中國茶藝
This class introduces different varieties of tea, tea utensils, history of tea and current tea cultures, and considerations when choosing tea—such as health benefits, food pairing, seasons, and more. Tea samples will be available to take home and—safety protocols permitting—to be tasted in class. Students are to bring their own teacup. For ages 15 and up. Class materials fee of $30 per semester (non-refundable).

Join us for informal, open-play sessions. Practice drills to improve your skills or learn new skills from fellow players. Students must bring their own paddle and balls.

Arts & Crafts 手工藝
學生將學習使用工藝紙，紙碟子，冰棒棍，夾子等來製作動物，食物等形狀的裝飾品。這門課的課程容易，適於年紀小的學生。適於5歲-7歲。每學期 $20 的課程材料費（不可退還）。
