We teach both zhuyin (注音) & pinyin (拼音).
6.  Should my child be in the Chinese as a Heritage Language (Track A) or the Chinese as a Second Language (CSL) language track?

Placement in a language program is determined by the Academic Team, but in general:

  • Students whose parents or family members speak Chinese with the students at home may be best served in the heritage (Track A) classes.

  • Students who do not have any exposure to spoken Chinese outside of school, or are new to learning Chinese, will find the curriculum of our CSL track more conducive to their learning.

7.  Do you teach simplified or traditional written Chinese characters?
We teach traditional written Chinese characters.
8.  Do you teach Cantonese?
No.  We do not offer Cantonese classes.
9.  How much is the cost per semester (15 Sundays)?
  • Language Class (Youth & Adult, 2 hours):  $260

  • Language Class (Parent & Toddler, 1 hour): $150

  • Culture Class (Youth): $50 with a language class / $95 without a language class

  • Culture Class (Adult): $50-95 (varies by class & enrollment in a language class)

10.  Are there other fees besides tuition?

For language classes, a fee for textbooks may apply. For culture classes, a fee for materials may apply. Fees vary by class. Updated information is available during the registration period each semester.

For families whose children are enrolled in a 2-hour youth language class, a separate $100 refundable Parent Duty deposit will be charged per semester.  After each Parent Duty day served, a $50 refund will be issued.  Two parent duty dates per semester per family are required for parents who have students enrolled in a 2-hour language class.

11.  Do you offer any discounts?

Tuition discounts are available for CSSJ teachers, special volunteers, directors, and trustees.

12.  When does registration open?

Registration for each semester opens about 3-4 weeks before the first day of the semester. See our online CSSJ academic calendar.

13.  How do I enroll in classes?

Enrollment is through online registration only. Before the registration deadline, register online on our website www.chineseschoolsj.org. After the registration deadline, please contact info@chineseschoolsj.org to register.

14.  Are there make-up classes for absences?

There are generally no make-up classes. Exceptions may be made due to emergency inclement weather/snow days, at the discretion of the school administration.

15.  What if I don’t have time for Parent Duty?

If parents are unable to fulfill their Parent Duty obligations, the deposit will be forfeited.

If a parent is also enrolled in an adult language class and another parent is unable to serve Parent Duty, the adult student may opt to serve before and after class (1:30-2:00 and 4:00-5:00) to receive half the refund.

16.  If I drop a class or withdraw from enrollment, can I get a refund?

Tuition is refundable under the following conditions:

  • 100% refund if the request is made before the 2nd class ends.

  • 50% refund if the request is made before the 4th class ends.

  • No refunds after the 4th class ends.

  • All requests to withdraw must be submitted via email to info@chineseschoolsj.org.

  • If applicable, the Parent Duty deposit will also be refunded if the dates are not yet served.

The following are non-refundable:

  • Administrative fees (for registration and late registration).

  • Class materials fees after the 1st class ends.

17.  Can parents sit with their student in class?

If the student is in the Parent & Toddler class, then yes! Otherwise, students are to attend class on their own, and exceptions are made only if a caregiver’s presence or support is truly needed. This is to better allow our young learners to build independence, interact with peers, form relationships, and learn classroom skills.

Requests for an adult to be in class will be considered on a case-by-case or class-by-class basis, based on a discussion with the teacher (and the Academic Team if needed). In some classes, parents may be invited to join the first class briefly to ease the transition. In others, parents may sit in only during special occasions or only if deemed necessary to support student learning.

Parents are strongly encouraged to wait for students in the cafeteria—to enjoy a quiet moment, help out with school tasks, catch up on work, or connect with fellow parents!
